Just like tv shows, creative projects have a pilot episode.
Have you ever watched the first episode of a recommended show and not really gotten it? The characters are unlikeable, the story is difficult to follow, or there’s just too much going on. In the cases when I have trusted the recommender, I’ve found that these problems rectify after a few more episodes. The writers hone in on the characters, the story pacing gets clearer, and the pacing slows down. Pilot episodes are almost always a special challenge.
You just have to trust that the throughline will come into focus.
At some level, every creative project I’ve tackled has had the same arc. When I first start writing a piece, composing an essay, or rehearsing a piece, the end product can seem muddy. I have to trust, in the absence of evidence, that sticking with the project will bring clarity.
