The Only Still Ensemble

There’s only one type of musical ensemble I can think of that regularly stays stock still in performance.

Not jazz bands. Not rock bands. Certainly not K-Pop or other Boy Bands. Not Gospel, acapop, Barbershop, or vocal jazz groups. Even orchestras and concert bands are routinely moving in sync with the music or the emotional content.

Give up? It’s the academic choir. (Also many church choirs and community choirs). Somewhere along the way, in an attempt to pare down the physical distractions from the vocal sound and to help students engage with their instrument, we have normalized standing stock still.

Maybe the fact that this type of choir is the only musical ensemble that routinely doesn’t move is a hint that we’ve accidentally sent the wrong message.

The music should move us. Our whole selves.

And also: moving with the music helps us sing better.
