The Microphone You’ve Got

“The best camera is the one that’s with you”

Chase Jarvis

Chase Jarvis, the photographer and entrepreneur behind CreativeLive, has often repeated the above quote. His message is simple – when the opportunity presents itself, the camera on the iPhone in your pocket is vastly superior to the DSLR camera in your living room at home.

That’s how I’m looking at the type of projects I’m tackling with my students. Is it the same as making music together? Of course not. Can we make recordings that sound as good as the ones we would make in the well-equipped recording studio we usually use? Naturally, no.

But the earbud microphones, bluetooth speakers, and VoiceMemo apps on our phones are enabling us to continue to make art together, even when we’re apart. That’s unequivocally good.

The microphone you’ve got is the best one for the job.
