The Grammys Are Worth It

Are the Grammy Awards worthy of attention from musicians?

Most musicians are not ever going to be nominated for a Grammy, let alone be featured on the big television special. Indeed, many of the best musicians I know have never been nominated for a Grammy. New York Voices, with nearly 40 years of outstanding recordings? No Grammy Nominations. Same for The Singers Unlimited during their 16-album career. International artists like The Real Group have no realistic hope of a nomination.

And the same is true, I’m sure, beyond my own niche. In whatever genre you choose, you can make a list of amazing artists whose work never fit into the Grammy niche.

Nevertheless, I think the Grammys are worthy of my attention and yours. They bring together brilliant artists, celebrate artistry, and give iconic performances tailored for a particularly discriminating audience.

The music I love may not be represented, but the music I hear will be worth the time and the musicians who make it deserve celebration, too.

(I confess, I’m also paying extra attention to the lights this year.)
