I’ve begun incorporating a solo project into my winter semester with Shades of Blue. It’s a good opportunity to explore beyond ensemble singing, and a new experience for most of my students, who don’t get other opportunities to sing jazz in an authentic solo way.
Step 1 is for each student to select a song; in this case, I’m using a list of about 20 ultra-reliable standards. (Most of them have been the subject of one of my Definitive Version series.) This encompasses multiple feels – swing, ballad, bossa nova, etc.
Step 2 is for each student to listen to at least five different recordings of the piece. Think Ella, Frank, Mel, Sarah, Nancy. But also – explore what Spotify or Apple Music has to offer. Because when you’ve listened to five versions, you know what’s fact about a piece, and what’s a single person’s interpretation.
Step 3 is to help them create a lead sheet in their key, and devote time to one-on-one coaching during rehearsal time.
Step 4 is to find a performance opportunity for those who want to take that step.
I love seeing students flourish outside of their comfort zone; this is one way I’m exploring that for my wonderful ensemble singers.
