Show-Art Spectrum

Every musical performance falls somewhere on the show-art spectrum.

In my estimation, a Jonas Brothers concert falls pretty far on the show side of the spectrum. The Juilliard Quartet falls pretty far on the art side.

But every performer, wherever they fall on the spectrum, needs to include both show and art if they want to be successful as a performer. The Juilliard Quartet needs some degree of showmanship, and the Jonas Brothers need some degree of artistry.

I find a certain segment of the art-side performers who reject that they need to be showpersons. But in my estimation the best artists are also excellent at entertaining.

One example that comes to mind is Miles Davis, who famously sometimes turned away from the audience when performing. It was a statement about how the music was the important thing, not his performance. But here’s the thing: Miles was an excellent showman, and his turn was in fact, part of the show. It delivered an entertaining performance that expressed the art he wanted to express.

You decide where to be on the spectrum. But if you’re on the show side, consider how you can add more artistry. And if you’re on the art side, don’t forget to put on a show.
