Shared References

Yesterday I heard on NPR, “Over a quarter of all Americans are too young to remember the September 11 attacks.”

Our success in teaching relies, in no small way, on communicating through shared references. The shocking observation above should remind us that our shared references must constantly be updated, because what you think is shared might not be.

I think that when we stop making sure we have common reference points with our students, we run a high risk of losing our ability to connect with them. It takes effort and intent to stay current, but it’s vital.

(Please note: I don’t mean being trying the “cool/hip” teacher. Using shared references is a different, more natural, more personal approach than trying to be cool and bely your age.)
