You can’t work on what you can’t see.
In the end, a habit is anything you’ve spent enough time doing that you don’t have to think about it. Good, bad, or neutral, habits are a part of all of our daily lives.
As we seek to improve ourselves – regardless of the area – it’s important to see our habits. This is trickier than you might think, because by definition they’re things you don’t think about!
I only know a few ways to become aware of the habits we all possess.
- Slow down. Do things you can do fast slowly. What do you notice?
- Get Help. I can notice your habits. You can notice mine.
- Record Yourself. Watch and listen – what do you see?
It takes bravery to really see our habits, but it’s only in that brave spirit that we can embrace and improve our good habits and begin the work of changing the habits that impede our progress.
