Can you schedule creativity?
Many people wait for lightning to strike – assuming that a creative idea will arrive unexpectedly. And certainly they can. We all can describe ideas that wake us in the middle of the night, or hit us in the shower, or some other time when we’re focused on other things.
But in my experience, we can practice creativity and train our minds to be creative at regularly scheduled times.
I know it because for years I did my creative music work from 4:30-6:00am. I know it because at the moment, I am consistently successful in writing my daily post between 9:00 and 10:00 at night, and never fail to have a creative idea at that time. (Even when I have time earlier in the day, I have less trouble writing later.)
Just as approaching deadlines can force creativity, so can regular schedules. So if you’re having trouble getting creative, why not schedule it?
