Precision Optional

Sometimes you don’t have to be perfectly precise.

My son is working on a band piece with many quintuplets sextuplet, septuplets, and other unusual subdivisions of the beat. As he worked to count and accurately play these, I explained that they’re meant to be a gesture – the individual subdivisions aren’t as important as starting and ending on the right notes at the right time.

As music interpreters, we need to know when precision is required and when it’s not. Sometimes we can tell the musical story accurately without worrying too much about perfectly reflecting what’s written on the page.
