Don’t wait till your current creative project is finished to get your next idea going.
I think of my creative life like a Pez dispenser. When you want a Pez candy, you can just open the dispenser and take one out. As soon as you close it back up, the next one slides into place, ready when you are. You load your dispenser with a whole bunch of candies all at once.
In the same way, you can preload your creative projects. Right now, I’ve got a list of a dozen arrangements and compositions I want to make. I’ve got a half-dozen books waiting me to find time to write them? Not to mention all the smaller creative works I’ve kicked around, waiting for the right time.
When I find myself with an hour of creative time, I don’t have to come up with the idea in that moment. I preloaded ideas like Pez candies, weeks, months, or years ago. (Ideas have a better shelf-life than candies.)
And when I finish one, I can move right onto the next.
