Patience

There are times when your students are learning, and you want to give all the knowledge to them. Here’s bitonal chords! Jacob Collier! Don’t forget The Mills Brothers! Ella Fitzgerald! Audra McDonald! John Cage! Einstein on the Beach! Alice Parker! Gene Puerling! Stravinsky! Rhapsody In Blue! Sondheim! Diminished Scales! Schenkerian Analysis! Just-Tuned Intonation!

And on, and on, and on. So many exciting ideas to share, exciting music to expose them too, exciting knowledge for them to acquire.

It takes patience, to slow down and give them what they need, what they can handle, and not go faster.

The standard pace is for chumps, sure, but a teacher going at light speed is a great way to leave students in the dust. That strategy is for chumps, too.

Patience, enthusiasm, and the careful distribution of the next right next idea. That’s the best we can do.
