Obsessed

This is one of my favorite parts of the creative process.

When a project is really going well, I get a little bit obsessed. Most of my projects are worked on in my basement studio, so you’ll find me doing a quick jog down a flight of stairs anytime I can find 10 minutes. I’m not likely to shirk my other responsibilities to my family or work, but I’m not likely to be reading or solving a crossword puzzle when I’m at this stage in the process.

It’s my favorite because it feels like a huge green flag waving that I’m pointed in the right direction. I know that no creative project finishes “perfect” (whatever that means) but when I’m obsessed, it means I’m creatively succeeding in at least going towards my goals.

I’m obsessed with the new composition commission I’m working on right now, and have literally headed to my studio at least 10 times today to work on it. It’s a delicious feeling.

It’ll be replaced, before long, with a slog or a race to the finish or a dead end. All of those are part of the process, too. But for now: OBSESSED.
