We don’t do the concert because we’re ready. We do it because it’s concert day.
Of course we prepare as hard as we can. Of course we anticipate challenges and work to overcome them. Of course we adjust our plans as needed to. Of course we want to do our best.
But in the end, as I told my superintendent recently, “I’ve never given a perfect performance in my life.” I’ve only given performances that perfectly represented where I was that day. I’ve given performances I was proud of, and performance I wish I could take back. I’ve given performances I’ll never forget and performances I don’t remember.
Each and every performance I gave was the performance I was prepared to give, not because I was completely ready but because the time was up.
Don’t hustle to get everything perfect. It never will be.
Hustle to be better today than yesterday. Work to inspire growth in your singers. Hustle to reach your most audacious dreams – though you’ll assuredly fall short.
