I think there can be a fear that if you go too long without exercising a craft, it disappears. It helps to recognize that that’s not true.
I haven’t written any new music recently.
While I think of writing music as the core of my professional work, there are seasons when I am too busy with other jobs and commitments to make it into my studio.
There are a few things I always think about when I have a long stretch away from writing.
- I miss that work. I feel less like myself when I’m away from it.
- I keep writing down ideas. Having musical ideas is different from having the time to work on them.
- I trust that I will have time again. and I trust that when I do, I’ll be able to drop back into it.
