One of the underlying mindsets we give ourselves throughout 16+ years of education is that projects have discrete endings. School years, semesters, term papers, sporting events, homework…they all have a start date and a date and time at which you’re finished.
The most interesting things in life, though, don’t really have a finish.
The arc of your life isn’t doesn’t have a planned finish date – you can keep growing, changing, improving all along. No deadline. The same for a career, for a marriage, for parenting.
And the same is true for music – the one big exception that students are exposed to in their educational careers.
Even with a concert date scheduled, or a recording session or festival performance, the music can and must continue to grow and evolve. It’s never finished.
