Network

I loath the idea of networking, because it implies something so transactional – meeting people for the sake of building a network that you can use in the future.

What I love is having a network. I love being able to, on short notice, find a sub bassist for a gig, or know the right person to call if I need a recommendation for something. I love being available to my friends and colleagues for my expertise and input.

So, then, how do you build a network without networking?

The answer is simple, and a little disappointing. It’s just this: keep showing up and doing your best work, again and again. Over time, your network will grow of people you trust and people who trust you.
