Momentum

In this long political primary season, one of the regular topics of discussion is which candidate has momentum.

And it’s true, having the sense of success can absolutely lead to people joining you, participating more, and committing to your movement.

How do you generate momentum in your choir? How do you jumpstart a momentum-less choir or capitalize on a choir with great momentum?

Here are a few ideas borrowed from presidential primaries that can help.

  • Early states are important. Be sure to start the season with success – music they can sing well.
  • Have lots of primaries. Have regular informal performances as opportunities to build or maintain momentum.
  • Stay on message. Your choir should hear a positive, momentum-gathering message from you at all times.
  • Acknowledge losses and pivot. Even with great momentum, not ever performance will land right where you want it to. Always be looking ahead rather than dwelling on failure.

The beauty of choirs is, unlike politics, one choir’s win doesn’t require another’s loss. We can all make great music, we can all have momentum, and we can all celebrate everyone’s success.
