Nitty-gritty rehearsal: you know ’em, you love ’em. At least I do.
What better than to tackle a beautiful piece two measures at a time, shape it into something extraordinary, then move on to the next phrase, applying lessons and continuing to shape. Spend 45 minutes in deep work on one piece, and the end result can be light years away from where you started.
What is the meta-lesson your students are learning from such a rehearsal?
I hope they’re learning that it’s in getting the details right that we get the piece right. Whatever you are working on in life, there are times when you need to take out a microscope and tackle the project one bit at a time.
