Managing Dishes

The magic of Thanksgiving has a lot to do with managing dishes. So does effective practice.

You can make the best meal in the world, but if you’re not taking care of dishes in a timely way, the memory you take away from the day won’t be the food, it’ll be the hours after dinner in the kitchen.

The thing is, dishes aren’t the fun part of cooking. But ignoring them is a recipe (ha!) for long-term failure.

In the same way, aspiring musicians have to learn at some point that dishes (scales, technical drills, tired but pedagogically effective repertoire) are an essential part of their development. Too often we want to have the fun part (usually, exciting rep) but not do the dishes.

Learn to integrate your “dishes” as a manageable part of your daily practice, so that you can keep enjoying those delicious meals, too.
