When I experience the sensation of writer’s block, a good strategy for me is to make it meta.
I write about the writer’s block. I write about strategies that have worked in the past to get me through it. I write about the circumstances that might have led to the writer’s block. I write about the idea of writer’s block.
At a certain point, of course, I realize that I’m writing. Which means the writer’s block is solved. Ha.
I can’t write music about music, but I can create music with the same lack of direction. I can play wrong chords, sing nonsense, improvise melodies and harmonies. Before long, I forget that I’m blocked from making music, and I go right on making it.
