Marketing, sad to say, is an important part of your job as a choir director. But during the fast-paced days and weeks of the school year, you don’t have the time to plan your marketing, create the eye-catching graphics and text that will publicize your successes. If, like many choir directors, you have a performance almost every week from October to June, it’s vital that you have a plan before the starting gun goes off.
So do some research now on how to plan things in advance. Here are a few ideas:
- A simple spreadsheet with dates and planned posts can help you be ready as things come up.
- Pre-writing some press release now is a little more work, but you will thank yourself in February, March, and April. You won’t have all the details now, but you know the overarching themes and can be at least 80% done before the school year even starts.
- Playing a little in some graphic design software now gives you the time to devise great graphics to promote concerts, announce auditions and results, and more. Just plan to drop in final text later if you can’t finish it now.
- A social media scheduler can let you plan exactly when those posts go live, allowing you to not have to even be on social media during those busy days.
- Reach out to your local newspaper and take the publisher or editor out for coffee. Find out exactly what they’re looking for, how much lead time they need, and how to submit material so it can be used.
