If you want to make it as a performer, loving to perform is a plus.
But it’s far more important to love rehearsal. For every hour you spend on stage, you will spend ten times that or more practicing – on your own, in lessons, with ensembles. This is obviously true for students and young professionals; but I am confident that even someone at career peak – say, Renee Fleming or Yo Yo Ma – still spends dramatically more time rehearsing than performing.
If you don’t love those practice hours even more than the performing, you’re going to get very tired of the “performing life.”
