Learning About Teachers

The MSVMA Summer Conference team just wrapped up our 44th Summer Conference – and the third I’ve been a part of.

I love many things about this journey; the sessions I get to help build, the team I get to work with, the colleagues I get to meet or reunite with.

One of the best parts for me is to learn about teachers. As a musician who teaches–even one who is married to a teacher–I still feel like an outsider regarding the day-to-day existence of teachers.

It’s in the sessions at conferences – watching what teachers react to, what questions they ask, what they are talking about afterwards – that I learn what their lives are like.

I only wish more outsiders could have that experience. As Mitchell Robinson put it in the final session yesterday, “Our teachers are doing nothing less than heroic work for our young people.”

If you are a teacher, thank you. If you aren’t: your assignment this week is to do something to better understand a teacher’s heroism.
