All the leadership books, seminars, and past wisdom should fall out the window once you’re in the room with your people you’re leading.
Well, they don’t fall out the window. They should still form the core of your approach to leadership.
But I have never learned a leadership technique that I didn’t later have to ignore because of a specific situation. I haven’t developed a skill that works in every leadership scenario. Leadership is responsive to the people in the room.
Over time, there is a tendency for leaders to attract people who respond to their approach to leadership. But that should never preclude a leaders always paying attention to the people in the room, and responding to the needs of those people in the specific moment.
