We sometimes think leadership always means stepping in when we see something that needs fixing.
But sometimes leadership means recognizing that it’s somebody else’s problem, and that our intervention will have the double result of (1) adding more voices that are needed and (2) distracting us from our own job.
This is especially important with large groups that have many moving pieces. Ensembles, casts, large teams.
It requires clear definition of each person’s role, either on their own or with the main leader’s input. And it requires the perspicacity to observe our role and stay to it.
There’s a time and place to jump in, and there’s a time and place when the best way to lead is by keeping out.
