I Saw the Headlines and I Read Poetry

I saw the headlines and I read poetry.

I don’t think I was being an ostrich, sticking my head in the sand. (And I do think that breaking news reporting often gets essential facts wrong.)

I read poetry because there was nothing I could do in that moment to change the situation. So then, my reaction has to be: how can I make the world a little better, and maybe help prevent the next one from happening?

So I read poetry. Or I listened to great music. Or I walked in the woods, with no headphones in my ears. Or I made good food for the people I love.

Is it escapist to see the headlines and turn to art rather than to outrage or despondency? I don’t think so. I think, actually, it’s the best thing to do.

What about you? Where do you turn after you read the headlines.
