Hummingbirds took a left turn millions of years ago from the rest of birds – they evolved to be much smaller, lighter, faster, than any other birds. Indeed, look at one now and you’ll find it hard to believe that they have far more in common with a bald eagle than with a dragonfly.
In biological terms, they found a unique genetic niche and then evolved to fill it–parting ways with the rest of their genetic family in the process. Their evolutionary tree shows them splitting off from the much more normal-looking swifts and then rapidly developing their unique form and behavior.
There are plenty of niches close to your training. But you might find even more success continuing to evolve after graduation. You can remain the swift you trained to be, but you might find just as much success and happiness in a more unusual niche.
