In the fall of 2014, I committed to writing daily. The reasoning was that I was having trouble prioritizing my weekly-ish writing, and I didn’t want to miss too many weeks. A daily habit would be harder to forget about.
It’s really true. These days, the hardest days to write are days like today – I wrote yesterday’s the day before, so I didn’t need to do any new writing. Harder still is coming back in August, when I’ve prewritten an entire month’s worth, and haven’t practiced my habit for a month.
The best habits, for me, are the ones I practice every day. Counterintuitively, it’s easier to find time for daily habits than weekly ones. Once established, the daily habits get done. The weekly habits require constant tending, constant reinforcement.
