We made you a New Year’s card!
This is not our first family Christmas card, but I think it’s our best so far! We didn’t start making it until December 23, so having it come out on New Year’s Eve worked out.
It’s our recording of Gene Puerling’s arrangement of “Deck The Halls” for The Singers Unlimited. We recorded it in our home studio, double tracking everything. I took care of the technical side and planned who sang what. (Every kid got to sing a duet with a parent, which was sweet.) That’s my thirteen-year-old daughter singing like Bonnie Herman on soprano!
All five of us had laugh-out-loud moments while recording (and moments of intense frustration), which made it fun and a great learning tool. Gene’s writing is not straightforward and he never cared all that much for clean voice leading. But the harmonic richness makes up for that!
Finally, I’ll say that those who know me probably assume I put my family up to this, with my devotion to Gene Puerling and TSU. But it was actually our kids who started asking to do this last Christmas, and who all enthusiastically made time to sight read over their Winter Break. (Now, they’ve been listening to The Singers Unlimited Christmas regularly since birth, so I guess I’m partially to blame…)
Hope you have a blessed 2025.
