Maybe the biggest gift that experience brings is speed.
The difference between the music I wrote twenty years ago and the music I write now is less the quality – I’m proud of the things I wrote in my early years – but the speed with which I wrote it. I can write more, faster, than I could.
Put another way – a college musician should be able to prepare most ensemble repertoire given sufficient time. A seasoned professional could be surprised by a repertoire change and be prepared to perform it the following weekend.
The same is true for all creative work; given sufficient experience, your ability to execute to your taste speeds up to many times where you started.
