We get a lot better a lot faster if we aren’t so caught up in our momentary expectations.
Have high expectations for yourself.
Stop having high expectations for yourself in this moment.
My daughter was trying to trace perfect circles around a biscuit cutter, and kept running into herself, causing bumps. As she got frustrated, I suggested she stop expecting them to be perfect.
“Draw twenty circles on this one page without caring if they’re perfect. You’ll learn how to be good at it. Then do one on your final page.”
Part of the frustration of practice is that we want to be good now.
But can we want to be good someday, while still being completely accepting of where we are now?
