When you want an equitable solution and someone else wants to WIN, how do you proceed? In other words, how do you not get run over when you’re willing to compromise and the other party views compromise as losing.
- Involve other people who are more interested in compromise.
- Communicate clearly your ideal position rather than how far you’re willing to compromise.
- Always be clear, respectful, and firm – your position has value.
- Don’t lose sight of your values. Know why your position has value and why you are willing to compromise that position.
- Lead with love.
It’s not easy to be passionate about equitable solutions in a world populated by people who want to steamroll you for being “weak.” But if you stop being the one to seek fairness, the world becomes that much harder and less loving.
