Dot-To-Dots

A Music-to-Mathematics comparison.

We want music literacy to be like mathematics. Learn A, then B follows. Learn B, then C follows. It’s a linear progression. A dot-to-dot. Get to the end, and you see the picture. In fact, you often can tell what the picture is well before the end.

Music literacy is more like elaborate yarn-nail artwork. the strands are connected in complex ways, and you often can’t tell what the shape is until you’ve done quite a bit of the work.

Keep mastering as much as you can, string more yarn around more nails. Eventually, you will see the picture. And until you do, you have to keep trusting that the person giving you instructions knows where they’re guiding you.
