Do I Know How To Do This?

One of the reasons I like to stay consistent in my work is I never have to ask myself, do I know how to do this?

I think that question is at the heart of writer’s block – answer that question “No” enough times and you will find yourself blocked.

On the other hand, do something every day, and the question won’t even occur to you.

Do I know how to take a shower? Do I know how to drive to work? Do I know how to make coffee?

We don’t get cooker’s-block (to coin a phrase) because we do it over and over again, so we never ask ourselves if we know how to do it. But if you spent enough days in a row eating takeout, you might develop a sort of cooker’s-block.

I just got back from a month of not writing – everything in July was written in April, May, and June. It has been a hard week, getting back into the groove of writing daily, but I made a point of never asking whether I still knew how to write. I just reminded myself of when and where I usually write, and then got back to work. Here I am.
