Dancing with Uncertainty

Find the real world, give it endlessly away
Grow rich, flinging gold to all who ask
Live at the empty heart of Paradox
I’ll dance there with you, cheek to cheek.

-Rumi

More and more, learn to live with uncertainty. Orient yourself to live in the places that require cognitive dissonance.

Each day with Alice, she prefaced critique or insight saying, “I may say the opposite tomorrow.” The challenges she put before us didn’t have the right answers of a quadratic equation, and she accepted happily that tomorrow’s answer might not match today’s.

The people I gravitate to, those whose company I leave energized, live in that space Rumi describes. The questions worth asking don’t have simple answers – may not have answers at all. But better to dance with those questions than live in the minuscule of certitude.
