The hurdles change over time.
When I was a young writer, the hurdle was writing something quality. Every bar, every chord took deliberation to make sure it aligned with my taste and intentions with the piece I was writing.
Now, that’s a lot easier. There is still deliberation, but I have a clearer sense in my head of what I’m looking for and much faster access to the musical material. Writing takes a lot less time than it used to.
The hurdle now is finding that time. Family, work commitments, and plain old life all interrupt my writing time. The work comes faster, but my writing time is less frequent.
Someday, I’ll find more time – but I have no doubt a different challenge will present itself at that point.
The hurdles change, but the work continues. Just find a new way to overcome the new hurdle, and get to done: because finishing is the only measure of creativity.
