How do you balance creating art and consuming it?
Most creators embark on their work because they are inspired by the art they have consumed. I’m inspired by the groups I’ve heard on recordings and in concert, as well as the brilliant arrangements I’ve sung or listened to. But at some point I reduced my consumption as I got busy creating.
As a general principle, I think more people would benefit from reducing their consumption and spending a little more time creating. Whether it becomes a career or evolves into a happy hobby, the world is brighter when you spend some time making art.
On the other hand, these days I have to set aside time to consume new art. I’m writing, conducting, and producing multiple albums at the moment; if I don’t make an intentional effort to stop and experience other art, I will often forget. That’s too bad because I think consuming art is an essential means of refilling your creative well, finding new inspiration, and growing as an artist.
My agreement with myself is to let it be seasonal. Some seasons I’m creating; other seasons I’m consuming. I try not to let morality or self-judgement come into play in either season, knowing that another season will come.
