There’s not one most-important thing I’m looking for in auditions.
I’m looking for a constellation of things. Ear, eye, reactivity, engagement, preparation, creativity, intellect, reliability, timeliness, musicality. That’s some of the constellation.
The thing about a constellation is: the starts aren’t all equally bright. Cassiopeia, for example, has five stars in its main constellation (that recognizable W in the sky) and no two are the same brightness. Together they form a shape despite not being the same.
We all necessarily have parts of our audition that are stronger than other parts. The secret is to make sure your brightest parts really shine through, and no parts are so dim that the constellation is no longer discernible.
