One of my core operating principles in rehearsal is to teach with concepts, not quick fixes.
Almost every time you take 2 minutes to fix a specific problem, you would be better off spending 4-5 minutes establishing a concept that can be applied to multiple situations.
Choose the right concepts that are important to your musical philosophy, and you will find that the pace of your ensemble’s growth, rather than plateauing, accelerates as you move further through your year.
It can feel like a time-suck at the top of the year, when you want to quickly get your choir into the repertoire, but it pays more dividends the more you commit to the approach.
