If you’re going to discuss a programming decision with your group, be clear about the question.
I asked my group tonight whether we should table a piece for a while.
I said more than just that, though. Because it’s important to be clear about the question you’re asking.
“I’m not asking if we’re capable of doing it justice. I know we are. I’m asking if that’s where we want to put our time and energy right now.”
I went on, “I’m asking because you have ownership of the direction of this group, same as I do.”
I haven’t always been brave enough to ask this question. I’ve pushed through on a piece that should have been set aside, or I’ve stealth-buried it by just not scheduling ensemble rehearsal time, but never talking about it.
I prefer being up front, giving the ensemble some ownership, and really digging into the rationale and honest conversation with the ensemble. It makes for happier ensemble members and, in the end, better music made together.
