Godin, Seth. Stop Stealing Dreams (or here as a printable PDF). Seth Godin delivers a manifesto about education. It’s powerful, and it makes you want to stand up and help make a change.
Goldsworthy, Anna. Piano Lessons. This beautiful memoir of a pianist’s relationship with her own piano teacher affected how I thought about teaching music, both privately and to groups.
Moulthrop Daniel et al. Teachers Have It Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America’s Teachers. Ironic title notwithstanding, this book broke own the problems with teacher pay more than a decade ago – problems that have only gotten worse since.
Palmer, Parker. The Courage to Teach. Parker Palmer is a brilliant essayist, but his vocation is teaching. Here he addresses the challenges of being a teacher.
Robinson, Ken. You, Your Child, and School. Want to know how to navigate education with your child(ren)? Ken Robinson’s got you covered.
Silver, Debbie. Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8. This book is a fabulous introduction to growth mindset and how to incorporate more of it into your teaching.
Sweet, Bridget. Growing Musicians: Teaching Music in Middle School and Beyond. Full disclosure: Dr. Sweet is a friend. Fuller disclosure: she is also a world-class educator, researcher, and advocate. This is a fabulous book about music education.
Zegree, Steve. The Complete Guide to Teaching Vocal Jazz. This book reads like a description of my rehearsals when I sang in Gold Company. Steve was undoubtedly one of the finest educators I ever interacted with. It says “teaching vocal jazz” but the title could just as easily stop right after the word teaching.
