Artistic Vision

There are a lot of visions for artistic creation. Here’s mine.

  1. I want to create music people enjoy making and people enjoy hearing. I value the enjoyment of communal music-making above any artistic statement I could hope to make, so I seek to make statements that do not detract from the enjoyment.
  2. I believe art should be as easy to understand as it can be made, and no easier. If I can turn a 5-part chord into a 4-part chord without diminishing the art, I will make that change every single time.
  3. I want to make art that breathes, that can change, grow, and be reinterpreted with every fresh performance. I want to empower the interpreters of my music to engage with it and find new things within it.

More than a reflection of me, the music I write is an expression of the values I have chosen for myself.
