Art and Questions

Does art ask questions or answer them?

I think great art does both. The film I watched today, for example asked questions about what you would sacrifice for your art – even as it answered questions about what life would really be like for a Hollywood superstar.

Art can answer simple questions: what would this poem sound like with a melody? Art can ask complicated questions: what does “happy ever after” really mean in the context of real life?

You can create art that answers questions without asking any, and you can create art that asks questions while giving no answers. But the greatest art does both.
