There’s more great art waiting for you. There’s a surplus.
I listened to an Ella Fitzgerald record I’d never heard before today. I know Ella’s singing as well as I know any singer, and I didn’t think she could surprise me anymore. To not only be surprised but to be inspired by a classic album I’d never heard was a treat I didn’t think I’d ever have again.
Great artists with sufficient longevity produce deep catalogs that we can only wish to plumb the depths of. (This is also a great argument for making more recordings than you think – the more art you make, the more great art you make.)
Go listen to 1975’s Ella & Oscar. You won’t be disappointed! And if you already know that one well, go find something you’ve never heard before!
