The Michigan Choral Commission Consortium (MC3) is an innovative new organization committed to facilitating choral compositions by connecting a group of like-minded choral organizations across Michigan. It seeks to make choral commissioning accessible to these organizations by pooling their resources.
Past commissioned composers include Alice Parker (2016), Andrea Ramsey (2018), Sean Ivory (2018), Rollo Dilworth (2018), Michael Bussewitz-Quarm (2019), Stacey V. Gibbs (2019), and Z. Randall Stroope (2019). There have been over 30 participating ensembles in both 2018 and 2019.
MC3’s 2020 slate of composers is currently being finalized, and as part of this, the organization is excited to announce its first ever choral composition competition. With 2020 being the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, all composers in the 2020 consortium will identify as female.
COMPETITION RULES
- Categories. there will be two categories: Established Composers (one or more pieces published with mainstream or leading independent publishers) and Emerging Composers (college, recently graduated, or emerging adult composers).
- Prizes. $1,000 (Established Composers) $250 (Emerging Composer).
- Eligibility. This competition is open to any US composer identifying as female.
- Restrictions. Text must be original or public domain. Scores should be suitable for intermediate-level high school chorus. Established composer should write for SSA or SSAA, a cappella or with piano accompaniment. Emerging Composer should write for SATB, a cappella or with piano accompaniment. Scores must be unpublished and must be able to be distributed/published with a dedication “Commissioned by the 2020 Michigan Choral Commission Consortium.” Octavo-length scores of 3-5 minutes are strongly encouraged. Scores must be exclusive to MC3 until July 1, 2021.
- Submission. Complete the submission form at www.jedscott.com/2020competition/. Instructions for submitting an anonymous score will be provided. We encourage MP3 MIDI realizations of the score along with PDFs of the actual score.
- Adjudication. Pieces will be judged by a panel of consortium-member conductors selected by the Consortium Director, Jed Scott.
- Deadline. Pieces must be submitted by May 1, 2020. Selected pieces will be announced by June 15, 2020.
- Premiere. Winning scores will be available to the estimated 30-40 consortium members across Michigan. They will have local premieres as well as possible multi-ensemble events. Funds are not guaranteed but may be available to underwrite composer travel to Michigan for one or more events.
- Entry Fee. There is no entry fee, but we ask that composers only submit one piece for consideration.
