The Arts Heal

A tale of two responses:

In response to the violence in Baltimore, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra played a free public concert on Wednesday at noon. In announcing it, they shared one of my favorite quotes from Leonard Bernstein:

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”

In response to the same violence, the Baltimore Orioles postponed a baseball game before electing to play the first ever closed game in MLB history on Wednesday at 2pm. In announcing it, they said this:

“After conversations with the Orioles and local officials, we believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of City resources.”

We need more art in our lives.
