Optimist, Pessimist, and Beyond

We know there are glass-half-empty and glass-half-full people. People who focus on the good there is, and those who focus on what could be better.
I think there are two more types to consider:
Bigger Glass People (BGP) and Littler Glass People (LGP). They are a step beyond the types above.
Two conversations:
LGP: The glass is half full!
You: Yeah, but I have to take some of the water.
LGP: No problem, I’ve got a little glass we can put whatever’s left into. Look, it’s half full again!
BGP: The glass is half empty!
You: No problem, here’s some more water. Now it’s full to the top.
BGP: Okay, but I was just about to switch to this bigger glass. It’s still only half full. And I spilled some water during the transfer. Thanks a lot.
Both of these types change the rules in the middle of the game. The difference is, LGP’s do it to be able to continue to put more positive energy into the world; BGP’s do it so they can keep complaining. They barely notice the good things you do except because it gives them a chance to demand more and complain about not having it.
Be an optimist, be a pessimist. Don’t be a Bigger Glass Person.
