Too Many Chiefs

The expression goes, “too many chiefs, not enough indians.”

I suppose there are situations where we need a single strong leader with a group following her lead unquestioningly.

Far more often, we need far more leaders. Leaders from within the team, leaders standing side by side.

I believe this at every level of society. The most authoritarian (chief) governments of the 20th century (Hitler, Pol Pot, Mussolini, Stalin) were the source of some of the most egregious abuses of humanity (indians).

At more personal levels: a choir with one leader can only go as far as that leader can cajole the singers; a choir made up of leaders is a choir that strives for greatness.

A school with autocratic leadership breeds infighting, discontent, and stagnation; a school full of leaders will innovate the future of education and send students towards success.

How can you help more of your students, more of your colleagues, more of your community to be leaders, side by side with you? How can you lead from the side, from the front, from behind in every situation you find yourself in?
